Get Outside – Trails, Parks & The Great Outdoors
Michigan is the #1 Trails State in the nation with a vast network of trails that traverse diverse terrains and abundant ecosystems from urban centers to the most remote forests. Throughout the state, Michiganders are only six miles from a park, trail, lake, river or stream, making outdoor opportunities endless. All program communities have existing trails and parks. Sharing the inventory of recreational resources is a central part of the SR2H focus on physical activity.
AmeriCorps members and community volunteers will organize a variety of excursions within each community, including location appropriate wooded, urban, or in-town trails, garden areas, nature preserves, local beaches, rivers, and more. By recruiting knowledgeable community volunteers, participants will also be introduced/re-introduced to the people, places, and traditions that make their community unique. The tours are also meant to engage the mind and senses, as participants are energized by the scent, sound, and pulse of their community. Through this programming, participants will also become “ambassadors” for their towns and gain a sense of community pride.
- 2,100 community members are projected to participate over the course of the grant.
