The Program

Michigan Fitness Foundation received a planning grant in the fall of 2017 to assess potential programming for health, wellness and physical activity in low-income, underserved communities across Michigan. Conversations were held and input was gathered from diverse voices of community organizers, educators, faith leaders, farmers market managers, health service providers, non-profit organizations, parks and recreation staff, trails groups, tourism professionals, tribal health advocates and of everyday citizens to assess needs around health, wellness and physical activity. Safe Routes to Health (SR2H) was created out of these conversations. SR2H programming has been designed to reach multi-generational community members with programming aligned with Michigan’s four seasons. AmeriCorps members will be recruited to provide seven program components to comprehensively support health, wellness, and physical activity behaviors and opportunities.
